FMM Kicks Off 2018 Season

Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band will kick off its 33rd season competing in Grade One today at the Ards and North Down Championships in Bangor, Northern Ireland. It will be the 38th season at the helm of the band for Pipe Major Richard Parkes MBE.

Come rain or shine (and it’s usually cold, bitter rain), the first contest of the Northern Irish calendar is a must for bands intending to compete the following week at the British Championships in Paisley, Scotland. After a long, cold winter inside, today will give bands the opportunity to have a tune on a long, cold day outside. Bands will have the chance to debut new medleys and MSRs, and remember what it is like to play without being able to feel your hands or face.

FMM will be first on in the Grade One contest, marching up to the line for 3.15pm sharp. The band hopes to be able to debut its new medley for the 2018 season, draw permitting. Stay tuned – links to recordings for the performance will be posted here post-event.

Today’s contest will be the first for a handful of new members to the band, including bass drummer Robert Smyth. We wish all new members of the FMM family the very best for today and the season ahead.

FMM also wishes to thank its sponsors, who play an integral role in the band’s success. We are grateful to R.G. Hardie & Co, Premier Percussion, and ACE Percussion for their unwavering support.

Good luck to all bands having a blow today. Here is to a safe, enjoyable and successful 2018!

Thanks to our FMM 2018 sponsors
