First in Fermanagh
Field Marshal Montgomery’s competitive season commenced on Saturday at the Co. Fermanagh Championships. The band won the Grade 1 contest as well as Best Pipe Corps and 1st in Marching & Deportment.
The band drew their No. 2 MSR – Balmoral Highlanders, John Roy Stewart and Charlie’s Welcome.
After a pleasant morning, the weather closed in during the afternoon and proved a challenging day for setting the pipe sound.
Speaking after the contest, Pipe Major Richard Parkes MBE commented, “I am very pleased with today’s performance. The conditions were difficult for setting sound and playing – cold winds and rain meant we had a reduced tune-up which can be unsettling before going on to play. That said, all players handled the conditions well and I am especially pleased for our new pipers who had a very good first day at the office.”
Drum Sergeant Keith Orr added, “I am very happy with our run today. The corps was solid and our new players have fitted in seamlessly. The focus for the corps is now on next Saturday and the first major championship of the year.”
