Frank Andrews is the band’s trusted drone tuner and is widely renowned in
pipe band circles for having an exceptional aptitude for producing great
sound. Frank’s experience, unique ability and humble nature have made him a
great resource to the band and to Richard Parkes. With every major win for
FMM, Frank has been at the heart of it, working behind the scenes to provide
invaluable assistance for which the band is greatly indebted.
Some facts about Frank:
- Frank began
piping at the age of 11 and was taught by Sammy Spence of
Portglenone. His major piping influences include Jim and Davey
Gordon, Bob Shepherd MBE, and Ian McLellan BEM.
- Frank was the
Pipe Major of McNeillstown Pipe Band for 30 years, 20 of which
were spent in Grade 1. During Frank’s time as Pipe Major, the
band were Lorient Festival Champions 4 times, All Ireland
Champions 4 times, the first and only Grade 2 band to win the
Grade 1 Ulster Championships in 1980, Grade 1 Ulster Champions
many times, Grade 2 World Champions in 1978 and were 4th in
Grade 1 at the Europeans in 1984 and 1993 and 6th in Grade 1 at
the World Pipe Band Championships in 1982.
- Frank's
favourite composer is Ryan Canning and his favourite FMM
performance was the World Pipe Band Championships in 2004.
- Frank is a keen
Manchester United fan and his favourite personalities include
George Best and Harry Gregg.
- Unbeknownst to
many, Frank is a regular singer with the 1st Port Glenone Church
Praise Band and Ballymena Presbyterian Male Voice Choir.
- In addition to
Frank’s drone assistance, he has also been known to be one of a
select few who can act as a calming influence on Richard when
the pressure is on!
